Local representative John Kivela (D-Marquette) said he was arrested for driving under the influence just outside of the state capital.

In a statement to downstate news outlets, Kivela said he would undergo treatment for alcoholism.

“I have battled with alcoholism for most of my adult life,” Kivela said according to the Detroit Free Press. My dependence on alcohol has become a problem, and I plan to seek treatment immediately.”

Kivela is a former mayor of Marquette was first elected to the state government in 2012. He serves the 109th district and is the Vice Chair of the Natural Resources committee and a member of the Energy Policy board. He was most recently in Marquette to discuss dark store legislation last week.

Unofficial statements tied to Kivela’s staff said there is no official additional comments at this time and his social media and state webpages have not updated about the situation.
