An email was sent to Northern Michigan University students this morning, warning them of a phone scam. The email was sent by Michael Bath, Director of Public Safety and Police Services.
According to the email, the caller will identify themselves as a member of the Michigan State Police and claimed the person receiving the call was under investigation. The caller would then request personal information.
The caller ID said that the number came from (517) 332-2521. This is a working number for the Michigan State Police headquarters in Lansing.
Bath said these are not legitimate calls and that the MSP has been notified of the scam attempt.
The calls began roughly at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday, November 6. If you have any further information, please contact NMU Public Safety at (906) 227-2151 or email@example.com.
